Character Death Information

If your character is killed off, that isn’t necessarily the end for them in M1A18. As mentioned in the FAQ, you have the option of bringing them back once - but keep in mind, sometimes, dead is better.

So I want to have them come back. What now?
They can rejoin the group at any point after they’ve been dead for a little less than two days in-game (one week IRL), and will do it the same way a character does when the player is coming off a hiatus. However, they may not experience the same disorientation, and they will not remember their own death.

What do you mean by “sometimes, dead is better”?
When your character comes back from the dead, something else comes with them - something that will slowly erode away their mind and twist their body, turning them into something blighted and inhuman. Over the course of the next one to three months of in-game time, they will become less and less like themselves, and more of a danger to everyone around them, until finally there’s nothing left of who they once were - unless the process is interrupted early via suicide or merciful execution.

How does the blight progress?
When the character first comes back from the dead, they will seem psychologically normal; physically, they’ll have a scar at the point where the fatal injury occurred. If you’d like, the texture and appearance of the scar can relate to what killed them (in ways other than wound track - for example, a character killed by one of the monsters might have a scar that resembles the skin texture of said monster). Over time, the scar will expand - it can be as veins, or rays, or a simple broadening in area, or something else; the geometry of the expansion is up to you, as is what’s left in its wake. For example, your character’s skin might become chitinous at the original wound site, or it might rot away, or they might experience abnormal bone growth, or any other effect you like. Some of the monsters encountered in the city will be humans who came back from the dead, and you can use the variety of their new forms as inspiration for what to do with your character when their time comes.

As the physical transformation progresses, their behavior will become increasingly aberrant. The first symptoms will be consistent with steadily worsening antisocial personality disorder and frontal and temporal lobe damage; however, they will soon progress to visual and auditory hallucinations (including voices telling them other characters’ terrible secrets, if you have their players’ permission), speaking in tongues, a strong tendency to attract monsters or lead the way into dangerous situations, and potentially other symptoms as well, if you come up with something particularly interesting. Eventually, as the remains of their mind fall apart completely and their body is twisted beyond recognition, they will become uncontrollably violent, and the only options will be to either drive them off or kill them - but if the former is chosen, they’ll keep coming back until the group finally kills them again.

Is there any way to reverse the process?
No, but due to the time frames involved, you’ll have plenty of time to play them during which they’ll be relatively normal.

That’s... depressing.
That’s the kind of game this is, my friend.

But what if I decide it was all a big mistake?
First, you'll have to kill the character off permanently. Then, you'll have to wait one IRL month; anytime after that, you can app a completely reset version of the character. That means they won't remember any of their previous time in M1A18 and they won't have any of the gear or scars they may have acquired during their stay in the city, but they will have any equipment that they lost since their first arrival.
